“We Have Plans To Abolish Betting Tax”-Dr Ato Forson

Written by Sarah Boye

The Minister of Finance Designate, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced his intention to abolish the betting tax in his first budget presentation during his appearance at the Parliamentary Vetting for Minister Designates on January 13, 2025.

Ato Forson addressed concerns regarding this controversial tax by emphasising that the government will focus on improving tax compliance, rather than increasing taxes, to enhance revenue generation.

Further, he argued that boosting compliance would significantly strengthen the country’s financial position.

BACKGROUND

Introduced in August 2023 under the Income Tax (Amendment) Act, 2023 (Act 1094), the betting tax allows the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to collect 10% of all winnings from gambling platforms, including those from sports.
