The Ghana Police Service has offered to provide security for the upcoming Democracy Hub demonstration, provided the organisers agree to change the event’s proposed location.
The police, who were notified of the demonstration on July 9, conducted a security assessment of the proposed site and deemed it unsuitable for public safety. Despite requests for the organisers to select a different location, they refused to comply, leading the police to seek legal intervention.
On September 18, the High Court ruled against holding the protest at Revolutionary Square during the scheduled dates for the demonstration as this site could disrupt public order and pose security risks.
However, while the court has barred the protest from taking place at the proposed location, the police emphasised that they have not banned the demonstration altogether. They reiterated their readiness to ensure security if the organisers choose a safer venue.
The protest, scheduled from September 21 to 23, aims to highlight pressing national issues, including socio-economic injustice, unemployment, rising poverty, state capture, nepotism, corruption, and the need for judicial independence.
