The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has affirmed its readiness to proceed with the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) from July 8 to 15 despite the government’s outstanding debts.
Addressing concerns raised by stakeholders about WAEC’s ability to conduct the 2024 BECE due to unpaid debts, the Council reassured during a press conference in Accra that it is fully prepared to oversee the examination for 569,095 candidates from 19,506 schools.
WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi clarified in an interview on Citi News that as the government had disbursed GH55.8 million, sufficient to cover the costs of conducting the examination.
“We want to assure everyone that starting July 4th, our personnel have been deployed to various examination centres to prepare and organise the exams.
Therefore, we can confidently say that the exams will proceed as scheduled. The GH55.8 million received from the government so far is adequate for the successful conduct of the BECE.”
“So, without a doubt, we have the necessary funds to carry out the examination.
Furthermore, plans are progressing smoothly for the release of additional funds to finalise the process and release the results,” he affirmed.
