The Northern-born artist Wiyaala, pointed out that despite the abundance of talent and creativity across the country, the majority of VGMA awards consistently go to artists from Accra. She argued that this not only undermines the efforts of artists from other regions but also perpetuates the notion that only artists from the capital are worthy of recognition.
In a recent interview, she expressed her disappointment and frustration with Charterhouse, the organizing body behind the VGMA, accusing them of favoring artists based in the capital city of Accra while neglecting the talents from other regions of Ghana.
“I will be as popular as anything in the North, but since it’s an Accra-based program and the majority of the radio stations are Accra-based, it’s normal that they only hear Accra songs,” she said in her closing statement.
