“Vacant Parliamentary Seats A Positive Sign For NDC”-Mahama

Written by Sarah Boye

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), Flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has asserted that, the declaration of four vacant parliamentary seats is a promising indicator of the party’s anticipated success in the December 2024 elections.

Speaking at a rally in Ningo-Prampram , Mahama declared that this parliamentary development reflects the NDC’s potential for electoral victory.

He urged party supporters to remain steadfast and committed in the months leading up to the elections to ensure the NDC’s success. While acknowledging the encouraging news, Mahama stressed the importance of continuing their efforts to secure a victory at the polls.

“If the reports I’m hearing from Parliament are accurate, then something historic has occurred. I’ve learnt that the Speaker has declared four seats vacant—three from the NPP and one from the NDC. This means that, within a single parliamentary term, the minority has become the majority, and the majority has become the minority. To me, this is a divine indication of what is to come, but we must turn it into reality on December 7, 2024.”

On Thursday, October 17, 2024, Speaker Alban Bagbin approved a motion introduced by former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu.

The motion contended that four Members of Parliament—Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kojo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central)—had forfeited their seats by announcing their intention to run as independent candidates, thereby violating constitutional provisions governing parliamentary membership.
