University Of Pennsylvania Awards Scholarship To Tyrone Marhguy

The University of Pennsylvania has awarded Tyrone Iras Marhguy, a former student of Achimota Secondary School, a full scholarship to study computer engineering.

Marhguy expressed his excitement about this achievement in a Facebook post, revealing that he also received offers from three other prestigious universities abroad.

He shared that the combined value of these four scholarship offers amounts to $1.4 million, which will fully cover his education for the next four years.

In his post, he wrote,

“I am excited to announce that I have been awarded a full scholarship to pursue computer engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. Joining the class of 2028 as a proud Quaker, this incredible opportunity comes after carefully considering breathtaking offers from #upenn, #duke, #Williams, and #F&M, all totalling $1.4 million over the next four years.”

This remarkable achievement follows the controversy involving Marhguy and Oheneba Nkrabea, two Rastafarian students who were initially denied admission to Achimota Secondary School due to their dreadlocks.

The school argued that its policies prohibited students from wearing dreadlocks and insisted that it would admit the students only if they cut their hair.

Both students eventually filed a lawsuit against the school, and on May 31, 2021, the court ruled in their favour, ordering Achimota School to admit them.

In 2023, Marhguy went on to achieve outstanding results in his final WASSCE exams, earning straight 8A’s, and subsequently took the SAT exams, further solidifying his academic success.
