Transport Fares To Go Up On Saturday April 13

Written by Louis

A rise in transport fares is set to take effect on Saturday, April 13, 2024, according to two transport unions.

The Ghanaian Transport Operators Association and the Concerned Drivers Association are the two unions.According to the two transport operators, the decision was made in reaction to the recent spike in petrol costs.

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana and the Transport Operators of Ghana announced a 15% increase for short-distance or intracity transportation and a 20% increase for intercity or long-journey transportation in a joint statement released on Monday, April 8, 2024. Additionally, they announced a 15% increase in taxi fares, with short-distance fares going up from GH¢ 10.00 to GH¢ 15.00.

They added that despite continuing economic difficulties, the government had not stepped in to lower the cost of petrol, auto components, or lubricants, which was the reason for the decision.

“Just as the majority of Ghanaians have probably seen, the government seems unconcerned with any drop in the cost of petrol, auto parts, and lubricants. The living conditions of transport owners and drivers are also getting worse due to other issues, like the current economic  challenges,” they said.
