Football icon Michael Essien has stated that he would choose Thomas Partey as the better midfielder when comparing the two.
In an interview with Sporty FM, Essien responded to a question about who is the better player between the two Ghanaian stars, and his answer quickly attracted significant attention.
He explained, “Between myself and Thomas Partey in our primes, I don’t think I would pick myself. I would go for Partey. He is a fantastic midfielder, you know.”
Both Essien and Partey have had the honour of captaining the Black Stars during their time with Ghana’s national team. After retiring, Essien transitioned into coaching, continuing to influence the football world in a new capacity.
Essien made a name for himself at Chelsea after transferring from Olympique Lyon in France. During his time at the club, he won multiple Premier League titles and the prestigious 2012 UEFA Champions League.
On the other hand, Partey, who is currently in the final year of his contract with Arsenal, joined the club from Atlético Madrid. So far, he has registered two goals and two assists in 21 Premier League appearances during the 2024-2025 season.
