President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has highlighted Ghana’s significant progress in rail transport with the launch of the 97-kilometre Tema-Mpakadan railway line.
At the commissioning ceremony, the President reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to revitalising the railway sector. He emphasised that , the project will boost economic growth and create jobs.Thus; “a testament to what vision, dedication, and hard work can achieve.”
He added that, construction began in July 2018 and, despite delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, concluded in December 2022.
“The railway will serve as the first phase of the Ghana-Burkina Faso Railway Interconnectivity Project, a 1,000-kilometre initiative designed to link Tema Port to Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. Government plans to construct over 4,500 kilometres of railway lines, positioning this project as a critical link in a multi-modal transportation system that connects Tema Port to the northern regions.
The newly constructed standard gauge line directly connects Tema, Ghana’s industrial hub, to Mpakadan in the Eastern Region, improving transport efficiency and trade logistics across the country.
