Ghana’s team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games proudly wore traditional smocks (fugu) during the opening ceremony on the River Seine on Friday, July 26.
The media attaché for Team Ghana, Benjamin Willie Graham, announced that the team wore these beautifully handwoven garments to celebrate and promote Ghanaian culture at the Games.
Mr Graham explained,
“We will wear our traditional fugu, along with black-down outfits and special footwear. Additionally, five athletes will attend the opening ceremony on the river to ensure they can proudly hoist the Ghanaian flag.”
This year’s opening ceremony will mark a historic first as it takes place on the River Seine, moving the event outside the traditional stadium setting.
The river will replace the usual track, with the quays serving as spectator stands and the setting sun casting reflections on iconic Parisian landmarks, creating a stunning backdrop.
This innovative outdoor approach will make Paris 2024 the largest opening ceremony ever in terms of audience size and geographical coverage.
