The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced Bashiru Gambo, a 53-year-old farmer to 20 years of hard labour for attempting to sell his son.
Mr Gambo faced charges of trafficking a person under Section 2(1) of the Human Trafficking Act 694 of 2005. He confessed to the crime and asked for leniency.
Before Judge Mrs Hathia Ama Manu delivered the sentence, Superintendent of Police Juliana Essel-Dadzie highlighted the rise in missing persons cases and requested a severe penalty to deter others.
The victim, Alexander Kyeremeh, a small-scale miner from Manu-krom near Obuasi, was Gambo’s son, who lived in Wassa-Abreshia near Wassa Akropong.
On June 27, 2024, police at Wassa-Nkonya learned of Gambo’s plan to sell his son. Undercover officers began tracking him and posed as buyers. Gambo, interested in the deal, negotiated a price of GHc 80,000 and promised to deliver the victim on July 1, 2024.
On that date, Mr Gambo brought the undercover officers to Manu-krom and contacted the victim to meet them.
He identified his son to the officers from a distance and let him join their vehicle. During the trip, the officers revealed their true identities and arrested Gambo at the Wassa Akropong Police Station.
