The state has released seven of the 53 Democracy Hub protesters on trial after 19 of them appeared in court following their detention.
State attorneys dropped charges against the seven individuals and confirmed submitting additional disclosures for the ongoing case. They also announced plans to file witness statements at the next hearing, set for November 21, 2024.
Nicholas Normeshie, the lawyer for the released protesters, praised the state’s decision, asserting his clients’ innocence and expressing confidence they would not face re-arrest.
“The charges were dropped because my clients were innocent. Given the state’s position, I don’t expect any rearrests. If it were going to happen, it would have occurred immediately after the court session,” Normeshie said.
The released protesters include Kingsley Adiedu, Seth Cofie, Gloria Louis, Nii Quaye Hammond, Manuel Biney, Joseph Dorsese, and Ernest Acheampong.
Meanwhile, the remaining protesters will continue to face trial as the case proceeds.
