Starlink operations are illegal in Ghana – NCA

Written by Louis

According to the National Communications Authority (NCA), Starlink’s operations and sales are prohibited in Ghana. Starlink is a satellite-based internet service provider that offers competitively priced service in more urbanized areas and connectivity to underserved locations. The Authority claims that none of Starlink’s equipment has received type approval or a license in Ghana.

The Authority emphasized that their operation in Ghana without a license or authorization from the NCA is thus directly against Section 3(1) of the Electronic Communications Act 2008, Act 775.
“Unless specifically stipulated by this Act, an individual is prohibited from operating a public electronic communications service or network or offering voice telephony services without a license issued by the Authority,” according to the NCA.

The NCA has therefore cautioned the general public against patronising equipment or service purported to be from Starlink. “Persons engaging in the sale or operations of the service are also directed to cease and desist immediately,” it stated. It assured the general public that it will continue to ensure fair participation and competition in the market to safeguard its licensees and consumers.

Starlink is a satellite internet constellation operated by American aerospace company SpaceX, providing coverage to over 60 countries. It also aims for global mobile phone service after 2023.
