Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has indefinitely adjourned parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, October 22, following a contentious session marked by disputes between NPP and NDC MPs over which party holds the majority.
During the adjournment, Bagbin mentioned receiving a Supreme Court directive to stay his earlier ruling, which declared four parliamentary seats vacant, but did not provide further details, adding uncertainty to the ongoing legal battle over the Agona West, Fomena, Suhum, and Amenfi Central seats.
Further, Bagbin explained that while enough MPs were present to conduct business, there were not enough to make binding decisions. Citing concerns about Parliament’s composition and the public interest, he adjourned the House indefinitely.
Earlier, NPP MPs walked out of the chamber, leaving NDC members to occupy both sides. This move, driven by disagreements over the majority status, led to a lack of quorum, forcing the adjournment.
Bagbin’s decision not to fully disclose the Supreme Court’s directive leaves critical questions unanswered about the vacant seats and Parliament’s overall legitimacy. As the adjournment continues, both parties await further clarity from the Court on the pending case.
