The new list of high-ranking public officials allowed to use sirens and motorcades in their official vehicles has notably excluded the Office of the Speaker of Parliament and the Chief Justice.
Speaker Alban Bagbin highlighted this omission during a parliamentary session, urging MPs to assertively defend their roles and responsibilities.
Former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu criticised the exclusion, stating, “It’s not about personalising it to Alban Sumana Bagbin. It’s about the Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, who should be entitled to a motorcade and police siren. It seems wrong to exclude the number three official from this privilege. Our republic has four key figures: the president, vice president, speaker, and chief justice.”
Additionally, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin expressed concern that the exclusion might hinder MPs’ ability to perform their duties effectively. He called for a more serious approach to the benefits and criticisms associated with Article 71.
The new road traffic Legislative Instrument (L.I.) had been withdrawn earlier due to public backlash over proposed benefits for MPs.
