The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to sign the anti-gay bill into law before the end of his term.
Speaking at the launch of the Church’s Bicentennial Anniversary on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at Osu Castle, Dr. Opare Kwakye emphasised the bill’s importance and encouraged the President to approve it to strengthen his legacy.
“As Presbyterians, we supported the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill when my predecessor led the Church. We see this as our birthday gift for the Church this year. Your Excellency, make our joy complete by signing the bill into law.”He said,
Dr Opare Kwakye made this appeal after the Supreme Court unanimously dismissed two petitions challenging the constitutionality of the bill.
The bill, passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, has sparked national debate, with supporters defending traditional family values and critics voicing concerns over human rights.
