Amid escalating violence in Bawku and along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway, the Ghana Police Service and Ghana Armed Forces have assured the public that they are enforcing strong measures to stabilise the area.
In a statement, the security agencies announced the deployment of joint police and military teams to contain the violence in Bawku and ensure security on the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway.
Their efforts focus on maintaining law and order while safeguarding travelers. The agencies highlighted that the increased security presence aims to prevent further violence, facilitate safe passage, and manage traffic.
Further, authorities urged the public to remain calm, assuring citizens that they are making every effort to restore peace in the affected areas.
This response comes after recent clashes in Bawku following the return of a rival chief and an ambush on travellers that claimed eight lives. The longstanding Bawku conflict, rooted in chieftaincy disputes, reignited with the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who had previously been in exile. His return intensified tensions, leading to violent confrontations and multiple deaths.
The conflict has also extended to the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway, where armed individuals set up roadblocks, particularly around Gbimsi, targeting travellers from Bawku. These attacks on the highway resulted in the tragic deaths of eight people and the destruction of several vehicles.
