Former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection Adwoa Safo has accused the previous government of allowing corruption to drain resources and undermine Ghana’s school feeding programme.
Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, March 19, she revealed that during her tenure, former President Nana Akufo-Addo directed her to audit the programme before approving funds for her ministry. However, after she submitted the audit report to the Cabinet, she said the President distanced himself from the directive under pressure from government insiders.
“I repeatedly contacted a top official in the programme, but she refused to respond. Instead, she sent a message complaining about my approach, claiming she had powerful connections in the government,” Adwoa Safo said.
Further, Adwoa Safo called on Mahama’s administration to implement urgent reforms, warning that corruption continues to cripple the programme.
“The corruption in the school feeding sector is alarming. This government must act. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor had a great vision for the programme, but it has been awry”.
