Representatives from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources have formally received a petition from the #FreeTheCitizens and #StopGalamseyNow demonstrators.
The petition, directed to Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor, expresses serious concerns about the catastrophic environmental damage caused by galaxie operations.
According to reports, the petition states,
“The time for empty promises and half-measures has passed. We speak not as individuals but as a united voice of a nation fighting for its survival, demanding immediate action to combat this existential threat. We look to you, Hon. Minister, as a key player in this vital struggle.”
Further, the group highlighted that the environmental destruction inflicted by galamsey reflects the suffering of Ghanaians, pointing to alarming health issues like a rise in mercury poisoning, especially among children and families near mining sites.
The demonstrators have set a seven-day deadline for the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to fully shut down all illegal mining activities nationwide, emphasising the need for collaboration with security agencies, including the police.
