President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana has embarked on a significant diplomatic mission, accepting an invitation from President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa to participate in the 15th BRICS Summit, which commenced on August 22 and will run through to August 24. The President’s attendance underscores the importance of Ghana’s engagement on the global stage and the strengthening of ties between African nations and the BRICS group.
The BRICS Summit is a gathering of leaders from the world’s major emerging economies, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. While President Vladimir Putin of Russia will not be in attendance, the Russian Federation will be represented by its Foreign Minister, Mr. Sergey Lavrov.
The BRICS grouping, which initially consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, and China, expanded in 2010 to include South Africa, forming the acronym BRICS. This alliance brings together nations with growing influence in the global economy, playing pivotal roles in regional and international affairs.
President Akufo-Addo’s presence at the summit marks a significant moment for Ghana, highlighting the country’s commitment to strengthening economic and political ties with nations beyond the African continent. The President is expected to deliver a statement at the summit, outlining Ghana’s perspective on key global issues and its aspirations for deeper cooperation with the BRICS countries.
Accompanying President Akufo-Addo on this important journey is the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, alongside officials from the presidency and the Foreign Ministry. This delegation represents Ghana’s dedication to building robust partnerships and exploring opportunities for trade, investment, and diplomatic collaboration with the BRICS nations.
As President Akufo-Addo engages with his counterparts from Brazil, India, China, and South Africa, discussions on a wide range of topics, including economic cooperation, infrastructure development, and climate change, are expected to take center stage. The summit offers a unique platform for dialogue and cooperation on matters of global importance.
President Akufo-Addo is scheduled to return to Ghana on Friday, August 25, 2023. During his absence, in accordance with Article 60(8) of the Ghanaian Constitution, Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will assume the responsibilities of the presidency.
Ghana’s participation in the 15th BRICS Summit is a testament to the country’s commitment to forging strong partnerships and contributing to global conversations on issues of mutual interest. As the world grapples with complex challenges, such engagements serve as crucial opportunities for cooperation and diplomacy to address shared concerns and drive progress on the global stage.
