The presidency has strongly denied reports that President Nana Akufo-Addo granted pardons to 11 individuals.
In a statement released on January 6, 2025, Director of Communications Eugene Arhin addressed the claims, confirming they were untrue, and thus, President Akufo-Addo has not granted clemency to these individuals or anyone else, as the reports suggested.
The Presidency issued this assertion in response to false reports claiming that President Akufo-Addo pardoned individuals such as William Ato Essien, the former CEO of Capital Bank, convicted for his role in the bank’s collapse.
Further, the reports also falsely mentioned Philip Akpeena Assibit, convicted in 2018 for causing financial loss to the state, and Akwasi Alhassan, who has been serving a life sentence for murder since 1993.
