His Eminence Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson, Chancellor of the Pontifical Academies of Sciences and Social Sciences at the Vatican, has stated that poverty compels many individuals to engage in illegal small-scale mining.
In an address, he stressed the importance of the Ghanaian government creating alternative job opportunities for those involved in illegal mining; otherwise, the nation risks becoming a failed state.
“If the current situation persists, Ghana faces the danger of becoming a failed state,” he warned.
His remarks follow the government’s broader efforts to tackle the issue of illicit small-scale mining.
