Former CEO of the now-defunct UT Bank, Prince Kofi Amoabeng, has raised concerns over the increasing influence of political parties on public leadership.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony for the inaugural cohort of PK Amoabeng Ambassadors, he criticised the financial support political parties provide to aspiring leaders, warning that it often creates a sense of indebtedness.
Mr Amoabeng argued that the problem doesn’t always lie with the leaders themselves. While some leaders may be corrupt or oppressive, others are genuinely humble and care for the people.
“Political parties invest heavily in raising funds and incurring debt to support candidates, creating an obligation for leaders to align with the party’s agenda. Once in power, these leaders are often constrain by the interests of their political parties”.
He further emphasised that such financial pressures can undermine effective governance. According to Amoabeng, political leaders may prioritise the party’s interests over national concerns, compromising their independence and decision-making ability.
