CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced that he will run for a second term as head of Africa’s football governing body in next year’s elections.
The South African billionaire and mining magnate, elected unopposed in March 2021 with the backing of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, agreed to run again after several CAF member association presidents, zonal union leaders, and key stakeholders urged him to continue.
CAF did not specify which figures encouraged Motsepe to stand, though it’s common for re-election candidates to gather support letters from influential figures within FIFA and CAF.
So far, no other candidates have announced plans to challenge for CAF’s top position, with the nomination period remaining open until four months before the March 2025 election.
At 62, Motsepe became the first Black African to appear on Forbes’ billionaire list, with a net worth of approximately $3 billion. His football journey began in 2003 when he invested in South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, eventually taking full ownership and heavily investing to help the team secure the African Champions League title in 2016.
Infantino’s endorsement propelled him to lead CAF after former president Ahmad Ahmad faced a corruption ban, making Motsepe the seventh president in CAF’s history since its founding in 1956.
