Parliament recently enacted the Affirmative Action Gender Equity Bill 2024 into law, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to promote gender equality.
After years of debate, members unanimously approved the bill following a motion by Gender Minister Darkoa Newmann, who led the vote.
According to reports, the new legislation aims to place a significant number of women in key positions within governance, public life, and decision-making to improve women’s lives across the country.
Additionally, Speaker Alban Bagbin acknowledged the progress but emphasised the need for further efforts to achieve true gender equity.
He urged members to commit to constitutional reforms to build a just society and enhance women’s involvement in national development.
Furthermore, the law targets gender imbalances in various sectors, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to increase women’s participation to at least 30 percent by 2030, as outlined in Clause 4 of Article 17 of the 1992 Constitution.
