The administration and production of cannabis for business and industrial use have been approved by parliament. The Narcotics Control Commission Regulations 2023, which legalize cannabis with a 0.3 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content, were approved after this.
Interior Minister Ambrose Dery explicitly stated during the L.I.’s passage that this should not be understood as the legalization of marijuana for recreational use.
He clarified that the ministry is currently getting ready to introduce cannabis strains with a THC content of 0.3 into the nation, as they are not already grown there.
However, Minority Chief Whip Govern Kwame Agbodza asserts that the country’s fortunes would not be altered by cannabis production and that this measure will undoubtedly be abused.
He issued a warning, saying that the country’s already grave mental health crisis might get worse if the bill was passed and then abused. And none of you are discussing the possibility of abuse and how it can deteriorate into the mental health issues that our nation already faces. Why do we act as though this will resolve our issue? Minister? “Do you even know how many people smoke marijuana in this country?” he asked.
“We are unable to regulate the quantity of electricity produced in this nation, even though the sources of it are understood. You’re not discussing granting people permission to grow marijuana. The fact is that Ghana is sufficiently endowed with gold, diamonds, and most recently, E-Levy; nevertheless, none of these can rescue our nation, the MP said, even if I am powerless to stop this.”
Sarah Adwoa Safo, the newly appointed Vice Chair of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, disagreed with Mr. Agbodza in the interim. She claims that using cannabis for industrial and medical purposes will boost Ghana’s economy. “We’re talking about a huge industry that has been developed, not simply a leaf in someone’s backyard. And I don’t see why we couldn’t take advantage of it if we have our fertile lands here and we can develop and make sure the proper structure is in place,” the woman remarked. THC 0.3 Cannabis has minimal to no psychotropic effects and can be used, among other things, to make paper, ropes, and other building materials.
