Organized Labour has reaffirmed its commitment to proceed with a nationwide strike on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, October 7, Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), confirmed the strike will go ahead unless the government takes meaningful action before the deadline.
The group expressed frustration with President Akufo-Addo’s response to their demands, despite his renewed promise to tackle illegal mining. They have called on the president to declare a state of emergency and implement long-term measures to combat the issue.
“We are resolute in our decision to proceed with the strike,” Ansah stated, adding that the government’s proposals fall short of addressing their concerns.
However, divisions have surface within the union claiming they weren’t call on before the strike was announce. The group called the “Concerned Members of Organised Labour” has voiced its displeasure with how the decision was express, though they still stand by the fight against illegal mining.
They have urged the leadership to suspend the strike and pursue further dialogue with the government.
