Organised Labour, led by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has issued a warning to the government, threatening a nationwide strike.
In a statement, TUC Secretary General Joshua Ansah called for an immediate state of emergency in areas affected by illegal mining by the end of September.
The group further demanded a halt to mining in forest reserves, the establishment of special courts for expedited prosecution of galamsky operators, and the deployment of the military to remove and destroy mining equipment in affected regions.
Moreover, Mr Ansah emphasised that the government’s failure to act has resulted in severe environmental damage, including the destruction of rivers, farmlands, and forests.
The statement warned that if the government does not take substantial measures by the end of the month, Organised Labour will launch protests and a nationwide strike to compel action.
This ultimatum adds to the growing pressure on the government to confront the illegal mining crisis, which continues to wreak havoc on Ghana’s natural resources and communities.
