Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Bossman Asare, has revealed that only 120 women are contesting parliamentary seats out of over 800 candidates nationwide.
Speaking at a forum in Winneba with religious leaders and representatives from political parties, Dr. Asare expressed concern over the low number of female candidates participating in Ghana’s 2024 general elections, underscoring a troubling gender imbalance in political representation.
“Although the EC introduced initiatives to increase female participation—such as a 25% reduction in filing fees for women and candidates with disabilities—female representation remains disappointingly low. Dr. Asare called this trend “unfortunate,”
Further , he emphasize that women’s inclusion is essential for balanced decision-making and policies that reflect all demographics.
The forum, themed “Enhancing the Electoral Process and Fostering Peaceful Coexistence,” addressed pressing election issues and promoted a collaborative approach to securing a fair and peaceful electoral process.
