The National Sports Authority (NSA) has temporarily closed the Baba Yara Sports Stadium for renovations, with plans to reopen before Ghana’s home fixtures.
This follows criticism about the stadium’s condition, attributing Ghana’s recent home defeat to Angola—the first in 24 years at the venue—to this poor state, despite the stadium’s successful track record over the past two decades.
NSA Deputy Director General Majeed Bawa countered the criticism by noting that both teams played on the same pitch, which CAF had inspected and approved.
Despite this, the NSA decided to move forward with maintenance and repairs, including fixing damage caused by fans after the recent game.
During the closure, the NSA will work with Asante Kotoko, the stadium’s main tenant, to find an alternative venue for their Ghana Premier League matches due to the stadium’s closure.
The 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season starts on September 7 and ends on June 8, 2025.
