On Saturday, October 21, 2023, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s presidential campaign in Tamale was abruptly ended by a dramatic turn of events including an altercation with Alhaji Dagoma, the NPP’s constituency chairman for Sagnarigu.
According to reports, the altercation happened while Kennedy was visiting the Northern Region and meeting with representatives from the Sagnarigu and Tamale North constituencies.
According to sources, Mr. Kennedy Agyapong made an astonishing assertion during the meeting, claiming that constituency chairmen were each given GHC100,000 to cast a ballot at the special delegate conference. However, the blunt and outspoken Sagnarigu Chairman found this accusation to be offensive. Chairman Dagomba immediately seized the opportunity to forcefully refute the accusations, branding Kennedy Agyapong a liar.
The delegates enthusiastically applauded Chairman Dagomba’s reaction, but regrettably, a handful of the aspirant’s supporters turned to insulting the delegates.
Elders had to step in to restore order after the situation quickly deteriorated. As a result, the presidential candidate had to abruptly end the meeting.
The media has been debating the claims of vote-buying and the sincerity of politicians in response to this conflict. As the episode has left them with a bad taste in their mouths, party members have expressed their disgust with Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s and Chairman Dagoma’s acts.
There are worries that more such conflicts may occur as the campaign season heats up.
It is imperative to prevent these conflicts from turning into physical fights since doing so would only undermine the legitimacy of our elected leaders.
