The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has urged commercial drivers to refrain from refuelling vehicles with passengers onboard due to significant safety risks.
At a sensitisation event in Cape Coast, NPA’s Central Regional Manager, Michael Opoku-Obiri highlighted the dangers of inhaling toxic fumes, particularly benzene—a carcinogenic substance found in gasoline that can lead to nausea, dizziness, and respiratory issues.
Further, Mr Opoku-Obiri noted that despite the open-air design of most fuel stations, many drivers often underestimate the risk of fumes becoming trapped inside the vehicle.
“From January to July 2023, Ghana experienced 3,819 fire incidents, primarily linked to commercial and fuel-related activities.” He said
Additionally, Mr Opoku-Obiri encouraged drivers to take simple precautions, such as ensuring that passengers exit the vehicle and remaining vigilant about potential hazards while refuelling.
The NPA emphasised that refuelling with passengers inside poses a serious risk of exposure to harmful chemicals.
