Ghanaian broadcast Journalist and President of the Foundation of Concerned Arts Professionals , kojo Preko Dankwa, has criticised the Food and Drugs Authority’s directive banning celebrity endorsements of alcohol.
In an interview on TV3, Mr. Dankwa described the directive as a “lazy” approach and argued that the FDA’s justification, which cites a World Health Organisation (WHO) report, is flawed.
He stated,
“No WHO report specifically recommends banning celebrity endorsements of alcohol.
The reports address the global risks of alcohol consumption among adolescents rather than the influence of celebrity advertisements on minors.
They focus on regulating marketing practices, particularly concerning athletes, rather than imposing outright bans.”
Mr. Dankwa has accused the FDA of misinterpreting these reports and failing to adopt innovative solutions to address the issue effectively.
