The Electoral Commission (EC) has clarify it has no legal obligation to provide summaries or statistical data with the certified voter register requested by political parties.
Addressing journalists in Accra, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa explain that the commission has given out the certified register to all political parties to ensure transparency but is not legally require to provide additional data.
“The absence of a summary does not invalidate the certified register. If you choose to reject it, that is your prerogative. Your request is not legally binding,” she stated.
Further, Mensa noted that providing a summary had never been part of the commission’s practice and cited historical precedent to support her stance.
“Despite this, the EC is passionate to transparency and stakeholder engagement, would consider generating the requested summary while reiterating that it is not a legal requirement.”
This response follows the NDC’s request for additional data to supplement the final voter register ahead of the December 7 elections.
