Parliament to summon VRA over dam spillage after devastating floods – Ablakwa

Written by Louis

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a member of parliament for North Tongu, has said that the Volta River Authority (VRA) will be called before Parliament to answer questions regarding the ongoing leakage that has caused widespread flooding and displaced thousands in the Volta Region.

Many people in the North, South, and Central Tongu districts of the Volta region have been forced to leave their homes due to floods brought on by the spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong hydro dams.

Mr. Ablakwa stressed the urgent need for negotiations regarding relocation and compensation for the flood victims during an appearance on JoyNews’ PM Express. Many people had their houses and means of support damaged by the flooding.

Mr. Ablakwa stressed the urgent need for negotiations regarding relocation and compensation for the flood victims during an appearance on JoyNews’ PM Express. Many people had their houses and means of support damaged by the flooding.

Remember that many of these folks have had their homes damaged, even after the leaking stops. As a result, he added on Tuesday, “we need to have a conversation about resettlement and a conversation about compensation.”

He firmly believed that the VRA had unanswered issues about how it handled the situation.

“We [MPs] don’t believe they handled themselves appropriately in this case, and we anticipate that they will reveal plans for the victims’ complete recompense. They cannot spend the rest of their lives in these camps. For the rest of their life, they cannot lose their farms, fisheries, or enterprises, he told host Evans Mensah.

The MP emphasised the necessity to approach the situation in stages.

He argued that while the flood victims in their temporary shelters need immediate assistance, it’s equally important to think about resettlement and full recompense for those affected over the long term.

He added that there would be no giving in when it came to protecting the rights and welfare of flood victims, a sign that Parliament would move quickly to launch an investigation into the dam spill and following flooding and hold the responsible parties accountable.
