National Film Authority Directs TV Channels To Get Permission From Copyright Owners Before Airing Films

Written by Sarah Boye

The National Film Authority (NFA) of Ghana has directed all television channels to obtain permission from copyright owners before airing any films.

In a statement by the Executive Secretary of the NFA Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante, she emphasised the need for terrestrial channels and media houses to assess and verify the authorization for films currently broadcast.

This action follows complaints from global film distributors regarding unauthorised broadcasting by some terrestrial channels and media houses in Ghana.

The NFA, established under Ghana’s Development and Classification of Film Act 935, is responsible for regulating and promoting the Ghanaian film industry, including distribution, exhibition, and marketing.

Hence, channels found broadcasting films without proper authorization will immediately cease until authorization is secured.
