John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, has remained loyal to Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running partner.
Despite Mr. Mahama’s scheduled March 7, 2024, submission of the former University of Cape Coast vice-chancellor’s name to the NDC’s Council of Elders and National Executive Committee, several party sources have confirmed to the Daily Graphic that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is still the party’s preferred candidate.
The two worked on the 2020 presidential campaign, and keeping Prof. Opoku-Agyemang—a former minister of education during Mr. Mahama’s administration—on board is seen as both strategically sound and advantageous because she is a well-known and well-marketed individual.
Retaining her would also remove her from any possible clash with affirmative action advocates who want to see more women in positions of top decision-making.
Additionally, it puts a stop to internal party unrest by factions demanding a new candidate hailing from the Ahafo, Ashanti, Bono, or Eastern regions.
