The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that the death of his father played a pivotal role in inspiring the medical drone delivery service.
According to him during a campaign in Accra, his father passed away in 2002 following surgery in Tamale due to difficulties in obtaining a blood supply. This personal tragedy motivated him to champion a drone system by traveling to San Francisco, persuaded Zipline to come to Ghana, and set up six drone centres that ensures timely delivery of essential medical supplies, including blood, to remote areas.
“We introduce drones to Ghana to deliver medicines, vaccines, and blood because delays in medical supplies were leading to many unnecessary deaths.
For instance, if a snake bites someone or if a woman in labor in a village needs blood urgently, immediate access to treatment becomes crucial.”
Additionally, Bawumia emphasize that the centers created now serve 2,700 hospitals and health centers and have completed 540,000 flights.
