Ghanaian musician and saxophonist who co-founded the Afro-rock band Osibisa, Teddy Osei has died at the age of 88.
Bessa Simons, President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (GHAMRO), confirmed his passing to Joy News on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
Osei’s musical journey began in his hometown of Kumasi, where he developed a passion for playing instruments at a young age. While studying in Sekondi, he formed his first band, “The Comets,” with friends. After college, Osei briefly worked as a building inspector before relocating to London to pursue his musical career.
In 1962, a government grant allowed him to study music in London for three years, but political changes in Ghana kept him in the UK. There, in 1969, he joined forces with other musicians to form Osibisa.
The band’s fusion of African rhythms and rock music earned them international recognition in the 1970s.
