Ghana’s mortuary workers plan to strike nationwide on Thursday, September 26, 2024, to protest poor working conditions and unresolved grievances.
In a statement on September 17, MOWAG General Secretary Richard Kofi Jordan emphasised that this strike is a last resort after unsuccessful attempts to resolve the issues.
It stated that, workers have voiced serious concerns about inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE), which leaves them vulnerable to diseases and hazards, unpaid salary arrears dating back to 2020, and the government has not provided financial clearance to hire 500 new staff members.
Furthermore, mortuary workers are still awaiting the COVID-19 bonus that the President promised. With this, the situation has worsened with a troubling increase in mortality among mortuary workers, with 16 deaths reported in just one year.
This follows a formal notice from the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) to the government regarding these concerns.
