The Ministry of Youth and Sports has clarified the payment made to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) for its role as the official broadcaster of the 13th African Games held in Accra earlier this year.
During the PAC meeting, Ussif claimed the Ministry had paid GBC over $3 million for production and broadcasting services. He made this claim in response to MP Samuel Nartey George’s concerns about unpaid debts to technical staff who worked on the event.
GBC Director-General Prof. Amin Alhassan, however, stated that GBC had only received $105,000 to support its decision to dedicate an entire channel to the African Games, which led to the temporary suspension of normal programming on GTV Sports Plus.
In response to this discrepancy, the Ministry of Youth and Sports released a detailed breakdown of its financial arrangements with GBC on August 20, 2024. The Ministry explained that it had received several proposals for the production and broadcasting rights, some exceeding $6 million, which it deemed excessive.
This clarification came after Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, sparked controversy with comments.
