In a resolute move to combat ongoing extortion and corruption at the Passport Office, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has taken a strong stance by relieving certain staff members of their duties. The Minister’s actions come in response to mounting concerns over unfair practices and manipulation within the passport acquisition process.
During a visit to the Passport Office on Monday, Minister Ayorkor Botchwey expressed her deep concern regarding the unfair procedures that applicants were being subjected to. Despite the Ministry’s successful efforts, with the collaboration of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to digitize the passport acquisition process, it has become evident that some individuals are intentionally exploiting the system for personal gain.
The Minister’s visit was followed by a decisive directive that employees who had been seconded to the Passport Office and had worked there for more than a year should not report to work starting Monday, August 21, 2023. This move is part of a larger strategy to bring order and integrity back to the Passport Office and its operations.
During her address, Minister Ayorkor Botchwey emphasized the need to restore sanity and accountability within the Passport Office. She highlighted the unfortunate tendency to place blame solely on politicians when corruption occurs, whereas in reality, certain public servants are engaging in wrongful acts that tarnish the reputation of the entire political spectrum.
The Minister announced that investigations into the alleged criminal activities have been initiated, and some individuals have already been identified. These investigations have reportedly uncovered a network operating in collaboration with Passport Office employees, and Minister Ayorkor Botchwey expressed shock at the widespread notion that only politicians and her ministry were responsible for corrupt practices.
Addressing the issue of “goro boys,” who exploit applicants in conjunction with office staff, the Minister emphasized the ongoing and forward-moving nature of the investigations. She firmly believes that outside players cannot operate without cooperation from certain personnel within the Passport Office.
As a stern deterrent to potential wrongdoers, Minister Ayorkor Botchwey issued a warning that those found guilty of corrupt practices will face legal action. This marks a significant step toward ensuring accountability, transparency, and fairness within the Passport Office, a crucial institution that plays a vital role in Ghana’s international affairs.
