Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has emphasised that the military should not play a primary role in securing the 2024 general elections.
In an interview with TV3, he stressed that the police are responsible for maintaining security during the elections, with the military only intervening if absolutely necessary.
“The military has no role during elections unless the situation demands it.They should not deploy them unless their intervention is essential.
He also highlighted that the 2024 elections will differ significantly from previous ones in the Fourth Republic, describing it as a pivotal moment for assessing the country’s dedication to multiparty constitutional democracy.
“This election is unlike those of 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, or even 2020,” he noted.
