Majority Caucus Calls On Speaker To Reconvene Parliament

Written by Sarah Boye

The Majority Caucus in Parliament has urged Speaker Alban Bagbin to reconvene the House urgently to address critical government business.

In a letter dated November 22, 2024, and signed by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the caucus proposed November 28 and 29, 2024, as suitable dates for the emergency session.

They asked Speaker Bagbin to exercise his constitutional authority under Standing Orders 57(3) and 58(4) to recall Parliament and prioritise key issues. These include approving tax exemptions for beneficiaries of the One District, One Factory Programme, securing a $250 million International Development Association facility for the Ghana Financial Stability Fund, and confirming the President’s Supreme Court nominees.

The petition follows the indefinite adjournment of Parliament on November 7, after Speaker Bagbin suspended proceedings due to the lack of an agenda from the Business Committee, leaving lawmakers without substantive matters to address.
