The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer pledges to abolish academic fees for first-year students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in public universities.

At the party’s youth manifesto launch in Accra on Monday, August 12, 2024, John Dramani Mahama announces that this initiative will make higher education more accessible.

Additionally, the party plans to revamp the Students Loan Trust Fund. The revamped fund will assist students who struggle to pay fees after their first year, enabling them to continue their education without stress.

The party highlights that this support will benefit students with excellent grades, such as those achieving 7As, 6As, and 8As, who often face financial barriers despite their academic success.

The NDC also promises a bed-for-all policy to address the accommodation challenges faced by public university students.

This policy will replace the current residential system that forces students to move off-campus after their first year, known as the “in-out-out-out policy.”

Instead, the NDC will partner with the private sector to create a regulated scheme that makes hostel fees more affordable and accessible, ensuring that students can stay on campus throughout their university education.

Beyond university education, the NDC focuses on empowering artisans across the country through a “Step-Up Certification Policy.”
