Mahama Urges Traditional Leaders To Condemn Political Violence

Written by Sarah Boye

The flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghana’s moral leaders to speak out against political violence as the country approaches the December elections.

During his three-day campaign tour, he addressed members of the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs in Wa and expressed his deep concern over the rising incidents of political violence, which he attributed to a culture of impunity within the political system.

Further, Mahama emphasised that those who engage in politically motivated violence feel protected by those in power, allowing them to evade accountability for their actions. He warned that without strong measures to tackle these violent behaviours, the situation could deteriorate, threatening the safety and peace of citizens.

“The ongoing violence persists because of impunity. Those wielding weapons know they will face no consequences; they believe they can act without repercussions due to their connections within the political establishment,” he stated.

Reflecting on the recent clash between NDC and NPP supporters in Mamobi, Accra, Mahama cautioned that Ghanaians should brace themselves for more such incidents, as the government is unlikely to take action against those responsible.
