Former President and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has urged journalists to avoid misleading voters about the December 7 election date as the polls near.
Speaking at the Peace Pact signing ceremony in Accra on Thursday, November 28, Mahama called on journalists to maintain integrity and accuracy in their reporting, warning that misinformation about the election date could disrupt the democratic process.
Further, Mahama urged journalists to provide voters with clear and accurate information to prevent confusion and safeguard their right to vote.
Thus, expressed concern over the spread of fake news, highlighting its potential to affect voter turnout and the credibility of election results.
“To our media practitioners, I encourage you to promote balanced and accurate reporting. Do not mislead the electorate by suggesting that some parties will vote on one day and others on another,” Mahama said. “Focus on delivering credible information that promotes peace and understanding, instead of resorting to sensationalism or speculation.”
Mahama’s call follows the arrest of Kumasi-based broadcaster Oheneba Nana Asiedu, who was charged with publishing false news. Asiedu allegedly claimed voters would cast ballots for presidential candidates on separate days, a statement that quickly spread on social media.
The Ghana Police Service dismissed the claim as false, warning that it could confuse voters and undermine trust in the electoral process. Police urged media practitioners to report responsibly to protect the integrity of the elections and preserve public peace.
