Mahama Proposes Creation Of New Region From Upper East

Written by Sarah Boye

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama has proposed creating a new region from the Upper East Region if elected.

During his campaign visit to the Bawku Naba’s palace in the Upper East Region, Mahama disclosed that a proposal for the new region has reached the Speaker of Parliament through the Member of Parliament for Bawku, Mahama Ayariga.

Further, Mahama argues that this new region will tackle urgent issues like the security crisis in Bawku and generate more job opportunities. He points out that Bawku’s land area and population match or exceed those of the North East Region, making a strong case for the new region.

Moreover, he highlighted that creating new regions and districts aims to decentralise governance and enhance security.

“I discussed the idea with him, and your Member of Parliament has formally requested creating another region from the Upper East Region to include the six constituencies in the Bawku area. Bawku Naba raised it with me, and I see it as a good idea for two main reasons.
First, it will bring government closer to the people, which is the main goal of creating new regions and districts. Second, it will address security concerns. That is , establishing a new region could better focus efforts on tackling these security challenges.”
