Mahama Promises Reliable Power System To Back 24-Hour Policy

Written by Sarah Boye

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to create a reliable and efficient power system to support his proposed 24-hour economy policy if elected.

In a recent address to energy sector stakeholders in Accra, Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to advancing clean energy as part of his broader energy transition plan. He promised to align power generation with demand forecasts, address reserve requirements, and improve power supply stability. Mahama also committed to increasing clean energy in the power generation mix to 10% through both fiscal and regulatory measures.

Further, he proposed implementing a time-of-use tariff system to offer businesses affordable, stable power for continuous operation.

Additionally, Mahama pledged transparency in managing ESLA (Energy Sector Levies Act) revenues and adherence to the cash waterfall mechanism to ensure energy sector accountability. He also vowed to reduce technical and commercial losses and collaborate with local entrepreneurs to boost efficiency and reliability.

Mahama emphasised,

“We will align power generation with demand forecasts and address reserve requirements. Our administration will increase clean energy consumption, targeting a 10% share of non-hydro renewables, and introduce time-of-use tariffs to support businesses operating around the clock.”

This policy is designed to ensure businesses and services are accessible around the clock, driving economic growth and enhancing productivity.
