Mahama Pledges To Scrutinise Government Procurement Exceeding $5 Million

Written by Sarah Boye

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Mahama, has pledged to establish an office to scrutinise government procurement processes exceeding $5 million if elected.

To address this, he noted that procurement is a major loophole exploited by government officials for corrupt activities.

Thus, proposed that the office would enhance transparency, check procurement breaches, and save government resources above the $5 million threshold or as recommended by Parliament.

Mahama emphasised that government procurement is a significant source of corruption and that no economy can sustain inclusive social and economic well-being if public service remains self-serving and corrupt.

“The use of public finances will always comply with our national laws, be transparent, justified by contemporary value-for-money tests, and be solely in the interest of broader citizens,” he stated.

Additionally, he stressed that eliminating corruption requires increased accountability in government procurement, which empowers the people.

Mahama assured Ghanaians that the NDC is fully committed to accountability includes setting up an independent value-for-money office to scrutinise all government procurement.

He made these remarks at the first edition of Mahama Conversation with the press on July 7.
